It's the same as when individuals say, I felt frustrated about him. You are endeavoring to share the feeling that you think the other individual is feeling. For this situation the essayist thought the man was so miserable and "loaded with feeling" that it influenced him heart to wiped out. It doesn't really imply that he is physically unwell, despite the fact that that could be the situation.
