A thermometer at the park shows a reading of 86° Fahrenheit.

If the temperature goes over 32° Celsius, Tom must have an extra break.

He uses this formula to calculate the temperature in °C.

F = 1.8C + 32

Will Tom get an extra break?

Given:

  • temperature recorded by thermometer is 86 degree Fahrenheit
  • if temperature exceeds 32 degree Celsius, Tom must have a break
  • the formula
    F=1.8C+32

To find: Does Tom get an extra break?

Solution: No, he does not need an extra break.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given temperature is 86 degree Fahrenheit.

Using the equation
F=1.8C+32, we substitute the temperature in Fahrenheit to find the value in Celsius.

So,

F=1.8C+32\\\\86=1.8C+32\\\\1.8C=86-32\\\\1.8C=54\\\\C=(54)/(1.8) =30

Therefore, as the temperature is only 30 degree Celsius (has not exceeded 32 degree Celsius), Tom does not need an extra break.
