if you have |a|=b, solve a=b and a=-b
so
|-4+5x|=16
so solve
-4+5x=16 and -4+5x=-16
add 4 to both sides
5x=20 and 5x=-12
divide both sides by 5
x=4 and x=-12/5
the 2 solutions are x=-12/5 and x=4
