However, because of diseases and harsh conditions, many Natives died or they ran away because they were familiar with the territory. To make up for the lack ok labour, the Spanish and Portuguese began to import slaves from Africa.

Effects - Because men were often chosen as slaves, there was a huge gender imbalance in Africa, and men would take many wives. In the Americas, few women came from Spain or Portugal which led the men to take Native or African wives. The children of mixed descent were called mestizos or mulattoes.
