Question 1 :

Given the slope of the linear function = 3

the line passes though the points ( a , -5 ) and ( -2 , 4a )

The slope = Rise/Run

Rise = 4a - (-5) = 4a + 5

Run = -2 - a

So,

\begin{gathered} (4a+5)/(-2-a)=3 \\ \\ 4a+5=3\cdot(-2-a) \\ 4a+5=-6-3a \\ \end{gathered}

combine like terms :

\begin{gathered} 4a+3a=-6-5 \\ 7a=-11 \\ \\ a=-(11)/(7) \end{gathered}
