What do I need to find?

The difference in the number of bean plants that were 9in tall and the combination of 7in and 8in tall plants.

What information do I need to use?

Number of bean plants 9in tall: 12 plans

Number of bean plants 7in or 8in tall:

7in: 9plants

8in: 8plants.

7in or 8in: 17 plants

How will I use the information:

Subtract the number of bean plants 9in tall from the number of plants 7in or 8in tall:

17-12=5

Then, there are 5 9in tall plants less than the combination of 7in and 8in plants
