Given that the start time is 5:15 am. It can be represented as,

S=5\colon15

Also given that the end time is 12:04 pm. It can be represented as.

E=12\colon04

The elapsed time (e) is equal to the difference between the end time and start time as given below,

e=E-S

Substitute the values,

e=12\colon04-5\colon15

Note that 04 minutes is greater than 15 minutes, so we have to borrow 1 hour from 12 hours and add it to the minutes,

12\colon04\equiv11\colon64

Replace the value and perform the subtraction,

\begin{gathered} e=11\colon64-5\colon15 \\ e=(11-5)\colon(64-15)_{} \\ e=6\colon49 \end{gathered}

Thus, the required elapsed time is 6:49, that is, 6 hours and 49 minutes.
