Seeing as how modern giraffes have long legs and necks in order to reach the tall tree's leaves, then it's safe to say that back then the trees weren't as inaccessible or as tall as they are now. Evolution for longer necks took place when the trees started to grow higher, meaning that if the giraffes didn't evolve, then they would die off, unable to reach their food source.
