A salsa recipe uses green pepper, onion, and tomato in the extended ratio 2:3:7. How many cups of onion are needed to make 36 cups of salsa?

2:3:7...added = 12

green pepper : 2/12(36)....1/6(36) = 6 cups
onion : 3/12(36)....1/4(36) = 9 cups <==
tomato : 7/12(36) = 21 cups

Since the ratio is 2:3:7, there are 2+3+7=12 parts in any salsa recipe.

Each part is equal to 36cups/12parts=3cups/part.

We want the number of cups of onion, which is represented as 3 parts.

3*3=9

So 9 cups of onion are necessary for a 36 cup salsa recipe.
