If you plot each of the functions, then you'll see that choices A through C lead to functions where the graphs do NOT pass the horizontal line test. The reason it fails the horizontal line test is because it's possible to pass a horizontal line through more than one point.

The only case where the horizontal line test doesn't fail is with choice D, so that's why choice D has an inverse function.
