The ultimate goal of Spanish settlements in Florida and New Mexico was a Catholic mission. Spanish aimed to transform the the population into Hispanic following its religious beliefs and convert their loyalty to the Spanish Crown. They claimed Mexico and in 1565, first colonization in Florida happened.
