How did most middle Atlantic states abolish slavery

The middle Atlantic states did it by legal means because they weren't much affected by Slavery and the idea of it wasn't rooted in the culture of those people, so ti wasn't a big deal for them and they instantly jumped on the support of abolitionism and outlawing slavery.
