Let x be the price for one pair of socks:
60 + 6x = 78
60 + 6x - 78 = 78 - 78
6x-18 = 0
6x = 18 and x = $3 (cost of 1 pair) and for the 6 pairs he paid $18

Answer: Cost 6 pairs of socks = $18 and the cost of one pair of socks = $3.

Explanation:

Given : Deb bought a pair of shoes for $60 and 6 pairs of socks.

The total before tax was $78.

Now, after subtracting cost of shoes from the total price paid , we get the cost of 6 pairs of socks.

Cost of 6 pairs of socks = $78-$60 = $18

Then , the cost of 1 pair =
(18)/(6)=\$\ 3

Therefore, the cost of one pair of socks = $3.
