What is the difference between fission and fusion

Nuclear fusion is taking two atoms and combining them in to one atom, while nuclear fission takes one atom and splits it into two atoms.

Answer: During fission, a larger nucleus is broken down into smaller nuclei. During fusion, smaller nuclei are joined to create a larger nucleus.
