The most logical answer is that
Nathan is perseverating on the building blocks.
He wants to keep playing with building blocks and he doesn't care about his sister at the moment because at that moment the only thing he cares about is building blocks and he wants to stay in the state of being intoxicated by the happiness of building blocks.
