Remember that primary sources are the ones that are created by a direct witness of a situation. This documents are the first-handed accounts of a historic topic. A primary source can be a diary, a document, a newspaper article or even an image. There exist some advantages on using them, one is that the researcher can get very close to the topic he/she is inquiring, there has not been any previous interpretation of it yet. The interpretation process is in his/her hands based on his hypothesis or point of view.
