Answer:

The number of students in each van is 10

The number of students in each bus is 41

Step-by-step explanation:

High School A:

10 vans, 12 buses, 592 kids

High School B:

2 vans, 13 buses, 553 kids

Let x represent the number of students in a van. and y represent the number of students in a bus. Then,

10x + 12y = 592 ...................................................................(1)

2x + 13y = 553 .....................................................................(2)

Multiply equation (2) by 5 and subtract equation (1) from the result to eliminate x

5 * (2):

10x + 65y = 2765

-

10x + 12y = 592

53y = 2173

y = 41 ........................................................................(3)

Using y = 41 in equation (2), we can find x

2x + 13(41) = 553

2x + 533 = 553

2x = 553 - 533

2x = 20

x = 20/2

x = 10
