A common stain remover is sold as a concentrated solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Diluting 55 milliliters of the concentrated solution to a total volume of 220 milliliters creates a solution that is a 0.40 M sodium hypochlorite. What was the molarity of the original concentrated solution?

0.10 M

0.80 M

1.6 M

6.3 M

To solve this we use the equation,

M1V1 = M2V2

where M1 is the concentration of the stock solution, V1 is the volume of the stock solution, M2 is the concentration of the new solution and V2 is its volume.

M1 (55 mL) = (0.40 M)(220 mL)

M1 = 1.6 M <------OPTION 3
