Those are complex numbers. The sum of complex is very easy:

(a + bi) + (c + di) = a + c + (b + d)i

So:

(4 + 2i) + (-6 - 7i) = 4 + (-6) + (2 + (-7))i = -2 + (-5)i = -2 - 5i

(4 + 2i) + (-6 - 7i) = -2 - 5i
