Many African Americans fought in the military on the side of the Union. These African Americans were primarily escaped slaves.
Women also assisted in the war as nurses. However, plenty disguised themselves as men and directly fought in the war.

In the civil war, women served as nurses, spies, smugglers or soldiers and African American served in the military
