1. Split the second term in 8y^2 + 17y + 2 into two terms
8y^2 + 16y + y + 2
2. Factor out common terms in the first two terms, then in the last two terms
8y(y + 2) + (y + 2)
3. Factor out the common term y + 2
(y + 2)(8y + 1)
