What led to the counterculture anti-war protests?

The anti-war movements in the US started because of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. It started among peace activists and leftist intellectuals, usually on college campuses. There were anti-war marches, and similar protests, a large number organized by the Students for a Democratic Society(SDS).
