Hepatitis refers to any acute or chronic inflammation of the liver. The most well-known causes are viral infections of the liver and alcoholism. But hepatitis can also be due to certain medications or a disorder of the body's immune system. Hepatitis is said to be acute when the body is in contact with the virus for few days or months, and chronic when it persists beyond 6 months after the beginning of the infection. Hepatitis may or may not progress to a severe form (fulminant), cirrhosis or cancer.
