1. Move the decimal point until there is only one non-zero digit to the left of the decimal point:

2. Count the number of places you moved the decimal point:

5 places

If you moved the decimal to the left the exponent will be positive

If you moved the decimal to the right the exponent will be negative

In the given number you moved the decimal to the right 5 places, then the exponent is -5
