Solve each of the following equations;

(1) -2x - 5 = -13

Add 5 to both sides of the equation

-2x = -13 + 5

-2x = -8

Divide both sides of the equation by -2

x = 4

(2) -(4n + 6) = -n + 2 (n + 6)

The minus sign affects both expressions in the parenthesis and you have

-4n - 6 = -n + 2n + 12

Next you collect the like terms and you have,

-4n + n- 2n = 12 + 6

**Note that when a negative value moves over to the other side of the equation, it becomes positive, and vice versa.

-6n + n = 18

-5n = 18

Next you divide both sides of the equation by -5 and you have,

n = - 18/5

n = - 5 3/5

(3) -7 = 1 + n/3

Subtract 1 from both sides of the equation

-7 - 1 = n/3

-8 = n/3

You cross multiply and you now have,

-8 * 3 = n

-24 = n

(4) 6 - 5h = 3h + 14

Collect like terms and you now have,

6 - 14 = 3h + 5h

-8 = 8h

Divide both sides of the equation by 8 and you now have,

-1 = h
