In "Harrison Bergeron," we encounter a dystopian society in which every citizen is meant to be equal to everyone else. The way in which the government achieves this is through the use of "handicaps." People who are too intelligent, too beautiful or too graceful wear these in order to resemble everyone else. This is the case of the ballerina. As she was extremely beautiful, she is forced to wear a mask so that she is not any better than the rest of the population.
