Triangle ABC, ACD, CDB

Using Pythagoras theorem


\text{hyp}^2=opp^2+adj^2

In triangle ACD


\begin{gathered} x^2=8^2+6^2 \\ x^2\text{ = 64 + 36} \\ x^2\text{ = 100} \\ x=\sqrt[]{100\text{ }} \\ x\text{ = 10} \end{gathered}

In triangle CDB


\begin{gathered} y^2=6^2+(b+3)^2 \\ y^2\text{ = 36 + (b+3) (b+3)} \\ y^2=36+b^2\text{ +3b +3b + 9} \\ y^2=36+b^2\text{ +6b +9} \\ y^2=45+b^2\text{ + 6b} \end{gathered}

the total lenght AB = 8 + b+3 = 11+b
