if six out of nine people surveyed prefer brand B over brand A, then how many out of nine prefer brand A? Assume that everyone surveyed liked either brand A or B but no one chose "both" or neither".

The equation would look like this:
6-9= ? This is the equation because you are trying to find how many people chose A. The '6' is the part that chose B and '9' is the total people.
6-9=3 This leaves three people left, so the answer is '3' people chose A.
Check:
To check, you reverse the equation. 3+6=9. This is correct so '3' is the answer.
Hope this helps!:)
