Urban centers rarely are in mountainous areas where travel is difficult, for example, and almost never where there is no water, which is essential to human survival as well as transportation.

Answer:

The great number of large rivers in Western Europe helped to develop large urban areas.

Step-by-step explanation:

Western Europe presents beneficial geography plenty of resources for the development of towns and urban areas. The most important resource for these urban centers are rivers, which allow the different settlements to subsist and to exchange goods among them. For this reason, commerce through the rivers created a trade network which boosted urban nodes that grew thanks to commercial activity. That is why most of large European cities are located beside a large river, like Paris (Seine), Rome (Tiber), and London (Thames).
