First, we find the area of one patch

A=(8)/(3)\cdot(8)/(3)=(64)/(9)

Then, we multiply this area by 64 because there are 8x8 square patches.

A_(total)=64\cdot(64)/(9)=(4096)/(9)=455(1)/(9)

Hence, the total area is 455 1/9 square inches.
