A hot-air balloon descends at a rate of 18 feet per minute. How far will the balloon descend in 10.6 minutes?

multiply the rate by the number of minutes:
18 ft/m x 10.6 m = 190.8 ft
To check:
190.8 ft/10.6 m = 18 ft/m
to see how you end up with the units:
(18/1 ft/m)(1/10.6m)
Cross multiply the 18 and 10.6 and the ones; the minutes cancel each other out, leaving you with:
190.8/1 ft or just 190.8 ft.

Hope this helps you!

Since this is just linear we can say that the balloon descends:

(-18ft/min)(10.6min)=-190.8ft (negative because the balloon is coming down)
