Close reading is basically thoughtful, deep understanding reading session that the reader will go through in a book or an article. (Basically you can do close reading with any piece of writing) And the way it helps the reader is it gives him/her a deep and better understanding of what they have read. Hope it helped! :)

Since close reading is a thoughtful and critical analysis of a reading, it focuses the reader's attention on important details and helps develop a deep understanding for the text. In doing this, it directs and focuses the reader's attention on what he/she is reading.

I hope I was able to help. :)
