Why were baseball grenades so effective in World War II?

This grenade weighs more than a pound (a baseball weighs only 5 ounces) and is more of an oval than a sphere. As such, while experience with throwing baseballs might help somewhat, the objects involved are substantially different and experience with one does not directly translate to the other.soo they aren't"baseball grenades".
