Given

y = |x| + 8

We have to find the value of y given x = -4.

So,

we simply plug in x = -4 into the equation:

\begin{gathered} y=|x|+8 \\ y=|-4|+8 \\ y=4+8 \\ y=12 \end{gathered}

The value of y is 12.

Note: when we have the absolute value, such as |x|, no matter what number we put inside this, we get the positive. So,

|6| = 6

|-6| = 6
