scientific notation helps so you have a smaller number to work with
only one digit from 1 to 9 is used before the decimal and any other significant digit (a number other than 0 unless it's something like 8.503 times 10^ #) are after the decimal
for example 590000000 is equal to 5.9 times 10^8
