When gasses emitted from the volcano get into the atmosphere, the climate gets messed up. The heavy clouds and gasses can affect warm fronts and cool fronts in the area, block out sunlight to the land below, and overall lower the temperature of an area due to the lack of exposure to sunlight.

Ash enters the air and filters the sunlight while trapping the air beneath it, and it can spread for many, many miles, affecting a wide range of areas. Since ash in the air can block sunlight it alters the climate in affected areas, and it poisons the air, making it difficult to breathe.
