An employee at a company that assembles chandeliers is packing boxes for shipping. In the first box, he packed 5 small chandeliers and 1 large chandelier, which weighed a total of 214 pounds. In the second box, he packed 1 small chandelier and 1 large chandelier, which had a weight of 98 pounds. Assuming the weight of the box isn't included in the shipping weight, how much does each size of chandelier weigh?

Let

x ----> the weight of a small chandelier

y ----> the weight of a large chandelier

so

we have

First Box

5x+y=214 -----> equation A

Second Box

x+y=98 ------> equation B

Subtract equation B from equation A

5x+y=214

-x-y=-98

------------------

5x-x=214-98

4x=116

x=29

Find out the value of y

x+y=98

29+y=98

y=69

therefore

the answer is

the weight of a small chandelier is 29 pounds

the weight of a large chandelier is 69 pounds
