Many monarchs insisted they were answerable to no person. What did they base their authority on?

God and the church basically....as they believed they where of godly blood or simply had divine right from god

There were some monarchs who really believed that they had God's right to rule, although this was especially the case during the Middle Ages, was the usual political practice, the creation of an alliance between the monarch and the Church, and strengthening of political power and influence.
