Transportation was developed due to over population from mining activities such as carrying out the products of the mines and bringing food to the miners. As a result of mining regions, railroads in colonial South America were developed to connect to ocean shipping.  The earliest railroad was built in Venezuela, from Tucacas to the famous copper mine at Aroa. This line was built in 1835 and abandoned shortly after. However, it has the distinction of being the first railroad on the continent

If I am not mistaken, llamas helped the Incans carry their goods around town.
