A certain forest covers an area of 4300 km². Suppose that each year this area decreases by 8.25%. What will the area be after 11 years?

Use the calculator provided and round your answer to the nearest square kilometer

In this problem we have an exponential decay fumction of the form

y=a(1-r)^x

where

y is the total area

x is the number of years

r is the rate of change -------> r=8.25%=0.0825

a is the initial value ------> a=4300 km2

substitute

y=4300(1-0.0825)^x

y=4300(0.9175)^x

therefore

For x=11 years

substitute

y=4300(0.9175)^11

y=1,668 km2
