The Auxilia or Auxiliary was the noncitizen corps of the Roman Army, while the Citizen forces of the Roman Empire were called Legionnaires because they belonged to the Legion. Unlike their legionaire counterparts, auxiliary recruits were mostly volunteers, not conscripts.

The soldiers of the roman army were called Auxilia. This translates to auxiliary in English.
