When you're talking to someone through a screen, then you don't know what their expression is. Emoticons aren't accurate about the person's reaction. If you talk to someone in person then you know that whatever you said wasn't offensive, or it's funny. Some people are really slow repliers also, but if they're in front of you, they will answer right away.
