When the temperature in a liquid is increased this means that the average kinetic energy of the particle that composed the liquid is increased. The increase in the kinetic energy is associated with an increase in the random movement of the particles and therefore an expansion of the liquid. Therefore, what causes the liquid to expand is th thermanl expansion.
