In this excerpt from “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allan Poe indirectly describes Montresor’s deceptive and vengeful character and temperament. Which parts of the excerpt provide these details? Choose all that apply.

A-“I drink,” he said, “to the buried that repose around us.”
B-“And I to your long life.”
C- He again took my arm, and we proceeded.
D-“These vaults,” he said, “are extensive.”
E-“The Montresors,” I replied, “were a great and numerous family.”
F- “I forget your arms.”
G- “A huge human foot d’or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel.”
H- “And the motto?”
I- “Nemo me impune lacessit.” [Latin for “No one attacks me with impunity.”]

Answer: I would contend that the right answers are the B, the G, and the I.

Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that by replying "And I to your long life" Montresor sounds deceptive, since the reader knows that he really does not mean that—as he himself says at the beginning of the story, he smiled at Fortunato, but his smile was "at the thought of his immolation." In addition, through the description of his family's arms and motto he also reveals his temperament and his vengeful character. The arms show a human foot crushing a serpent that has taken hold of his heel, and the motto warns that if someone attacks him, the attacker won't be exempted from punishment.
