It is the act of forcing an English-speaking man into the British navy. As many as half of American's sailors in the early 1800s were defectors from the British navy. The American government gave the sailor papers stating that they were American, but the British ignored the papers. Sometimes the British even impressed sailors who were actually American. The British practice of impressment greatly angered Americans and led to the War of 1812
