Lords had some important duties in the middle ages in order to rule the kingdom in a systematic manner:

A Lord usually played the role of both vassal and lord. This means, they could control a piece of land, and leased some of that land.
Lords had power over their tenants to the points of being able to execute them if the tenants misbehaved and they could do anything with them as their punishment.
They had to save the whole emperor bu guiding proper guards in a systematic manner and they had some marines (special forces) of that time, in order to provide a great service

One, they had to manage their kingdom's economy, deal with politics, and decide how to punish criminals.

Two, they had to maintain a strong military force and a defensive stance in case of war.

Three, they had to make sure wages were fair, jobs were steady, food was being produced, and resources were being gathered to further build his kingdom.

The lord had many very serious responsibilities and was responsible for almost everything in his kingdom.
