move the 2/4 to the left side by subtracting 2/4 or 1/2 from both sides. In other words, isolate x and solve.
x + 2/4 = 8
x + 1/2 = 8
x + 1/2 - 1/2 = 8 - 1/2
x = 8 - 1/2
x = 15/2
