I think the answer is(1) the search for basic resources and lands suitable for the cultivation of cash crops; (2) the desire for new trade routes to Asia; and (3) attempts to spread Christianity.

Better Technological advancements. Boats how there were two types of sails and also the invention of the compass and the astrolobe. Hope it helps.
