A student finished 8 of her homework problems in class. If the ratio of problems she finished to problems she still had left was 4:1, how many homework problems did she have total?

Using the ratio we are given
4:1 we can use it to find the amount we need
4/1 = 8/x
do cross multiplication
(4)(x)= (8)(1)
4x = 8
divide both sides by 4 to isolate the x (it stands for the amount of assignments she still has left)
x = 2

So if she finished 8 assignments and still has 2 to do
8 + 2
She has a total of 10 homework problems

Hope this helps :)
