Hector spent $40.15 for the DVDs, the sales tax was $2.55, and he didn't have a coupon? How much would each DVD cost?

$40.15 $80.30
2 $2.55
x_____ +______
$80.30 $82.85

Hector payed $82.85 in all for the DVDs if the sales tax only includes for the whole amount.

$40.15
$2.55
+_____
$42.70

Hector payed $42.70 for one DVD if the sales tax counted for both DVDs. If you multiply this amount by two, you will get the amount that he payed for both DVDs, with sales tax being counted for each DVD.

with sales tax : (40.15 + 2.55) / 2 = 42.70/2 = 21.35 per dvd
without sales tax : 40.15 / 2 = 20.08 per dvd

unless the sales tax is included in the 40.15...??
